In the movie clip “Idiocracy” it shows how in the future “the ordinary will become the extraordinary.” They will prove this by using genetics and biotechnology to dumb down society. In the movie they take an average American person and they put him in a hibernation program for a year, but there was human error in this experiment so he doesn’t wake up for 500 years in the future in the year 2505. When he awakes he realizes that the society is dumbed down and he is easily the most intelligent person on Earth. He questions how he could be the smartest person on Earth. They say he took an IQ test while he was in prison and he scored the highest score in history. My personal response to this movie clip is this shows how genetics and biotechnology will affect us in the future and how the “ordinary will be the extraordinary” if the guy is supposed to be the smartest person on the Earth, imagine how dumb everybody else must be.

The purpose of this movie clip is to show how the biotechnology in the future will affect us and lead us as a society into a dystopia where people will be dumb, the society will be corrupt, people will have no social responsibility and the society will be all about popularity. The biotechnology will be too advanced for us because we as a population will be so dumbed down because we were dependent on the technology to get us through in life, but what happens when the technology becomes smarter than the human race? Well this is what happened in the movie “Idiocracy.” The “ordinary people became the extraordinary people.” In order to achieve this purpose they made the movie a more funnier/relaxed version of the future. Most future movies make people scared but this one had a different tone about it, it was almost as if this movie was meant to attract viewers who were young children/pre teens because it was more of a funnier future movie.  The overall effect of this work is made to show society that we cannot become too dependent on technology because in the future that may come back to haunt us.

In the movie “Idiocracy” the word human means you are living on the Earth with no particular purpose. In the future in this movie the humans have no social responsibility and they are lacking intelligence because they relied on technology too much, this is what caused their downfall. The humans in this movie act like they are 10 year olds all the time. They are a disgrace to society and they have no purpose on this Earth because they are so dumbed down. The humans relied on everybody else to get things done, but the problem with this is that everybody relied on each other to get things done, but in the end nothing got done because everybody thought somebody else would do it.

Our depictions of the future reveal that the present is a product what life could be like in the future.  Whatever we are doing now as a society is what life will be like in the future. We have to make good decisions now so it will not affect us in the future. Right now we are not making good decisions and we are already seeing the affects of our bad decisions with the natural disasters and global warming, the problem is the Earth isn’t just getting hotter in the summer time, our winters are also getting much colder and we are experiencing more and more snow each year, as we seen last winter. What we do now will affect us greatly in the future, especially our children and their children.

In this movie clip they used images and language to manipulate people’s minds by showing images of people doing dumb things to show how dumbed down the society is, for example they showed the guy shooting a gun up into the air while he was inside an arena. Also they showed someone answering a question that was simple addition, they said, “what is three plus two” and the guy said that the answer was “two.” Also at the end of the movie clip a guy said “you are supposed to be the smartest guy in the world, but you are pretty dumb sometimes.” This is supposed to show how dumbed down the society is, and is supposed to bring a sense of humor because the guy is so dumb himself. The images and language used helps to explain the overall purpose and effect of the movie “Idiocracy.”

Biotechnology

In the movie clip “Avatar” there is a group of people that go to a land to do research on a rock that is worth 20 million a kilo but there is a problem. Where the rock is most abundant there are a group of indigenous people who are called “Nambe.” They are threatening the people from getting the rocks and they are on the brink of war if the Nambe people do not relocate. These savages are very hard to kill because their DNA is mixed between the native people and human DNA. So in order to stop them they are making an Avatar similar to the Nambe people. They are going to use the Avatar as a spy to see what is inside the village. The Nambe people will think that the Avatar is one of them and the Avatar will gain the Nambe peoples trust. But what happens if the Nambe people realize that he is not one of them? My personal response to this work is that it was a very smart idea to create a person that is similar to the Nambe people; he can learn what the Nambe people do and maybe get the rocks that they are looking for and bring them back to his people. But wouldn’t this create war if the Nambe people find out that the Avatar isn’t one of them? The people said that they can’t kill the Nambe people by themselves because they are too strong, and they are trying to stay out of war.

The purpose of the movie “Avatar” is for us humans to realize that we are very lucky to be humane and we can do the things that we want to do. We are lucky to be able to be humane and be able to feel pain, loneliness and all of the other emotions. The Nambe people were indestructible and they were like robots, they did not feel anything and could not break, they only had one state of mind. We as humans have everything and we are lucky to be able to have that. The Nambe people were indigenous and were forced to create their own lifestyle in the jungle and then they were invaded by this group of people, their homeland was destroyed and they were on the brink of disaster. We as humans are lucky enough so that we never will have to worry about such a thing happening to us like what happened to the Nambe people. The techniques used to achieve this purpose were the Avatars that the humans made in order for them to look like the Nambe people. There were also the blue colors of the Nambe people to show how different and indigenous that they were and there were sound affects and there was a key shift when the Avatar told the Nambe that he needs her help, you wouldn’t expect this to happen, this added to the action filled clip and raised many questions.

In the movie “Avatar” the Nambe people are not humans, they are indestructible like robots and they are a blue color and they show no emotions which is the total opposite of humans. The Nambe people have a whole different meaning of the word “human.” They believe in fighting and in wars while the humans in the Avatar movie just wanted to get rich by getting the rocks. The Nambe people would not leave their homeland and so violence took place.

Our depictions of the present reveal that the future is going to be much crazier than what we may think. Who would be thinking that their kid be a new kind of species, similar to that of the Nambe people? Imagine if there was a similar species? They would rule the Earth because the humans would not know how to deal with them or control them. They would spread around the globe, each time they would get stronger and stronger as more of them form, and they would rule everything and be the premier power. In the movie “Avatar” they used the language and the images of the Nambe people and their indigenous lifestyle to manipulate our minds and make us believe that there could be a life of people like the Nambe people.

Children Of Men

In the clip “Children of Men” we see the problems that we could be faced with in the future and the impact that it could have on our society and maybe could lead us to our civilization being in “crisis” as seen in the short clip. How are we going to deal with overpopulation? In the movie clip they limited the population to a certain number, once that number was reached there were “NO BABIES” that could be born. But what happens if a woman gets pregnant? We seen this in the clip, the black lady was pregnant and everybody looked scared, they were all wondering what they were going to do? Will they kill the lady? Will they abort the baby? If the baby is born, would somebody have to die? How would they chose who would die? This is similar to Hammurabi’s Code and his theory of “an eye for an eye.” You also saw people who were upset at the woman who was having the baby; this led to destruction of the city, and people rioting against each other. My reaction to this clip is that everybody should have an equal chance at living. There shouldn’t be restrictions and limitations on people’s lives. That is morally wrong and should never happen. If society becomes overpopulated, then let it be. People will have to find new ways to survive. Maybe live underwater and build an underwater city? Who knows but killing people and putting a certain restriction on the amount of people that can live is ridiculous and it should never happen.

The overall purpose of this text is to show you the problems that we could be faced with in the future. The overpopulation aspect is a big deal and they are trying to emphasize that to you through pictures of signs saying “NO BABIES” and signs that say “Our Civilization is in Crisis.” This is meant to put fear in the people, so people will think twice about the things that they are doing on an everyday basis. It also shows the affect that a person could have on society. If one person is upset about something in the society, for example if one person is upset that the women is having a baby and the fact that she got pregnant when she wasn’t supposed to do, this could cause for disaster in a society that is already very unstable. We saw this in the movie clip. The people were in the car with the women who was having a baby and people were throwing things at the car and causing destruction, just because they were upset at the black women. This shows how messed up the society could be in the future and how just one person could have a big impact on what people do.

In this clip the meaning of being “human” is very different than what the meaning actually means today. Today being a human means you have equal rights, can do whatever you want, being able to fully function and do the things that you please on an everyday basis. But in the movie clip “Children of Men” the meaning of human is very different than today. In the movie clip the “humans” are almost like robots. Everybody is the same in that society, no woman can have a baby, and the people look like zombies because they are so scared and petrified because of the destruction in their society. These people are just doing the same thing every day and they are just going through the motions, rather than trying to change things and get their society out of a “crisis” as stated in the movie. This is why the people remind me of robots, it is almost like they serve no purpose in their society, they are emotionally drained and they are in a constant struggle against their people.

Our depiction of the future and the fact that the world could become overpopulated is very realistic and could very much happen. But we need to find ways and take steps now to prevent overpopulation so it doesn’t happen. If we cannot prevent it then we need to find ways at least to control the average number of babies coming into the world every year. Maybe we limit each family to only having one or two children? Would this be right? Right now as a population we need to find a way of limiting the birth of children or else as seen in the movie clip, women will be able to have “NO BABIES” and our civilization will be in “crisis.” In the movie clip “Children of Men,” we use language and images to manipulate peoples mind by using capital letters and certain colors to make them stand out. This places an emphasis on certain words and shows the effect of what could happen in the future.  

Eureka

Technology

          

The clip from “Eureka,” starring Colin Ferguson and Salli Richardson-Whitefield, is a good example of the technology that we could see in the future. In the clip Officer Andy is being introduced to his new smart house by Dr. Fargo. The smart house is filled with new technology that we could be using in the future. The house is controlled by you, all you have to do is say what you want the house to do and it will do it. For example if you want the lights to turn on, you would tell say “turn on the light.” The smart house is being operated by Fargo, who he calls “Sarah”. Fargo created the house and later we find out he is using the smart house to spy on Officer Andy throughout the night for any malicious behavior he might be conducting. In this episode Susan Perkins died and the town buried her, but she later shows up at the police station wondering where her husband is, we later find out that she was cloned by a scientist, maybe Dr. Fargo since he also created the smart house?

My personal response to this text is I think we rely too much on technology already so in the future when technology is far more advanced then it is now, I don’t think that we as a population is going to be able to handle it. We like to push things to its limits and I believe that we are going to push technology to its limit, until it can’t be any more advanced which is why I think that technology will destroy us. We are so dependent on technology in our everyday lives, but what happens if the technology is no longer there? Or what if the technology becomes too advanced for us to handle? For example Officer Andy became to dependable on the smart house in the clip, so when the smart house was malfunctioning he didn’t actually know what to do. I believe that technology in the future will actually hurt us more than it will actually help us.

The purpose of this clip is to show what houses could be like in the future. The houses could do everything for you and you no longer have to do things yourself because the house automatically does the job for you, hence which is why it is called a “smart house.” The techniques used in the clip to help achieve the purpose were flashing electronic waves inside houses, automatic sensors in the smart house, “Sarah” who controlled the house, the cloning of Susan Perkins and monster that went into the little kids room during the middle of the night. The overall effect of this work is too show that the future will bring us new technology and we will have to be able to handle it or else it could destroy us.

In this clip being human means self replicating yourself and living with all of the fancy technology. In this clip I get the sense that humans are being compared to robots almost. Humans go about their lives pretty much doing the same thing day in and day out. Then when I seen that “Sarah” was controlling the house this just further backed up my point for me. The robot “Sarah” is in the people’s lives and she is controlling their house and the things that they do inside of their household.  In this clip being human is like being a robot, you are being controlled by a force that is addicting (Sarah) and it is producing what you want.

We all have our depictions of the future and what it will look like, but truthfully none of us know what the future will really look like. In this clip our depictions of the future reveal that the present isn’t so great. We may thing that we have all of this great technology and we may think that we have everything, but after seeing this clip, I would love to live 100 years from now when they have smart houses, flying cars and who knows what else. The people in the future will really have everything that they want. They will look back on us and realize how lucky they are to have the things that they will have in the future.

We use language and images to manipulate people’s minds by showing things that are unrealistic right now, in hopes of one day being able to have these things and use them. In this movie they manipulated our minds with the smart house because right now it is not realistic in our lifestyle. But it is quite possible in the future, with the grand technology that could be made. They memorized us by showing the smart house and all of the luxurious things that it could do and how much it could make our lives easier because it does everything for you.
